First moulds
The first test with the wooden mould learned us a couple of things. First of all when we wanted to speed up the R&D, we needed to go for a smaller volume and therefor a smaller brick. Second, we needed something that could create a bit more pressure. We figured out that a welded steel mould would be a good next step in combination of the extruder designed by Precious Plastic.
This machine can create up to 40 bar of pressure, so it would potentially “blow up” the moulds. Paying good attention to the process and having an exact amount of plastic would be key to protect them. Yet the mould would help us create some consistence in the bricks due to better tolerances and therefor create our first constructions.
These moulds were done with the help of our contacts at the department of Industrial Design at the Delft University of Technology, where we could do the welding and use their CNC machine for the details in the top and bottom parts of the brick. The end results were great: 4 sharp and shiny moulds ready for production.
